Problems Are Like Stars

Not too long ago, watchmen used to stand on top of a pole and look out for land, pirates, ships and tricky shallow waters. The captain would stand at the front, with maps and tools, take measurements, determine the location of the ship and set the route.

The accuracy of the measurements could only be checked when stars came out at night.
A mistake of even 1 degree could cause the ship to miss its route for miles, sometimes days and even get lost.
Stars were guides of captains, signs of problems.

Now these methods are archaic.

Nowadays, ships employ modern measurement tools to find their way in the commercial waters. Accurate and instant measurement, calculating shortest paths, weather conditions, currents, and tides increase efficiency while decreasing cost in commercial shipping. Efficiency and reduced costs are the keywords for staying competitive.

Much like the business world.

In today’s fiercely competitive environment, it is no longer possible to manage a company with old-fashioned methods. The “captain” of the company, much like the captain of a ship, must have instant access to valid and accurate information.
Relying on this information, the “captain” will then set out the “best” route for the company.

Misinformation can cause irrepairable damage like a ship being driven ashore.

It is past time for doing business on instinct or “whims”. Now is the time to do serious thinking.
One must think well in advance before taking a step, make plans and act accordingly, while “speed” remains the keyword.

The new economy requires new thinking forms and new solutions. Now it’s time to start thinking.
