In trade, prospective buyers and sellers from other countries often run into problems, depending on which country they're buying from and the type of purchase.

The problems may arise from

  • Language barriers
  • Distance
  • Cultural differences
  • Socio-economic state of the country and its individual
as well as
  • Not having sufficient information on foreign trade rules and regulations specific to the country in focus,
  • Not knowing the market conditions of the country in focus,
  • Not understanding the way the customs of the country operates, both officially and unofficially,
  • Delays and difficulties encountered in transportation,
  • Delays and difficulties arising from banking&financing procedures of the country.
In addition to these macro-level problems, problems arising from
  • Untried/new suppliers and producers,
  • Untried/untested production and manufacturing capacity of supplier/producer,
  • Foreign trade experience of supplier/producer,
  • Not knowing whether the supplier is the manufacturer as well,
  • Business ethics of the supplier/producer,
  • Credibility of the supplier/producer in domestic markets
will also pose serious threats on trading deals.
Among things to be considered before finilazing an import/export deal are:
  • Will the supplier provide the negotiated goods/services in time?
  • Does the product/service comply with the specifications in the contract?
  • Are the required production/service standards met?
  • Is the quality of the product/service in accordance with the agreed quality norms & standards?
  • Is finishing and packaging done according to specifications?

Without doubt, an international auditing/supervising company can be put in charge to assure the above. However, the "certificate of inspection" obtained usually covers controls like weight, size, quantity, quality etc. at the last point before exportation. This may not be adequate for goods that have to be checked in various stages of production.
